Careers in Times of the Pandemic? With these tips it works
Short-time work, dismissal, bankruptcy: the Corona crisis is not leaving its mark on the labor market. But what does that mean for individual career aspirations and career plans?
In principle, it is always important to remain open to developments, says psychologist and coach Cordula Nussbaum. Crisis or not. “Nowadays, many people no longer want to learn a trade and stay in a company until retirement, and it is no longer realistic either.” In addition, the job profiles are changing so quickly today that it would be grossly negligent to feel safe.
Find the right moment
But when should you actually consider a change? “If there is enough evidence that you will no longer be able to do the job, it makes sense to reorient yourself,” says Alexander Brungs, spokesman for the German Coaching Association.
Once you have made the decision to reorient yourself, self-analysis begins. “What distinguishes me, in which cultural environment do I feel at home and what skills, strengths and values do I have?”, Christina Georgsson from the German Federal Coaching Association describes the central questions. She advises considering which industry is comparable to the current one.
According to Brungs, those affected should not only react to the market, but rely on their own strengths. «Concentrate on the things you can and try to find a good place for them in a market analysis.»
Opportunities on the hidden job market
Georgsson sees great opportunities in the so-called hidden job market, i.e. positions that are vacant but not (yet) officially advertised. If you know your strengths and wishes, you can search for and write to suitable companies. “As a rule, these are more family businesses or upper middle-class companies that need to be conquered.” If positions are still held back, you are already talking.
Hotel managers, for example, could see which niches could be occupied in the future, says Nussbaum. “After the crisis, more people are traveling than before.”
Or you dare to make a big change and go abroad. «Managers who are internationally positioned will have another chance», says career advisor Georgsson.
Stay on top of the topic even with interim solutions
Anyone who has lost their job can look for an interim solution that has nothing to do with their previous activities. Nussbaum recommends, however, to stay on the topic anyway – for example, by using networks or warming up previous contacts. “Don’t change saddles right away,” she says, “keep your foot in the door.” It could even make sense to set a deadline by which you want to do the alternative job.
Whether an interim solution is necessary depends not only on financial matters but also on one’s own level of fear and the need for security, explains Georgsson. “If you take on a job where you earn less money and have less responsibility, it will scratch your self-esteem and you will lose credibility, especially as a manager.”
Use your own creative power
Nussbaums advises you to think about what you can do today and tomorrow in order to be happy in the long term: For example, attend advanced training courses that will make it easier for you to return to work later. «That gives you the feeling of designing yourself and not being determined by others, which is important for motivation.»
Consultant Georgsson knows that it takes foresight and courage to do things that are outside of your comfort zone. It directs the eye to the positive: The corona crisis could also promote you because without the challenging situation you might simply be too comfortable for certain steps or decisions.
